The Mind Heal Clinic’s approach to healing stems from a distillation of ideas gathered in thirty years of practice of internal medicine, cardiology, and medical hypnosis by H.Manning Curtis M.S., M.D., F.A.C.C, F.C.C.P., A.S.C.H. Dr. Curtis is certified by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

The beginning of any health consultation should rest upon the development of a caring relationship, anchored in trust and respect. Disease states tend to lead to a sense of margination from ourselves –we are no longer the healthy person we once were– and from others –we are no longer members of the healthy community. A physician must not exacerbate this sense of isolation by accidentally treating the patient as a disease rather than as a person.

An accurate history is the key to uncovering a diagnosis, and designing a treatment plan for any illness. This requires whatever amount of time a patient needs to tell his or her story. Dr Curtis believes that the holistic, open approach to history taking, to go “where the patient wants to take you,” is fruitful because it allows the subconscious mind to reveal its awareness of the illness. The subconscious mind controls 90% or so of our body and mind functions, and is constantly monitoring our state of being. We need to listen to its quieter voice, so that it can lead us to the diagnosis and successful treatment.

There is no substitute for advanced technologies to both diagnose and treat physical illnesses.  However, the choice of the most appropriate technologies rests upon an accurate patient history. The same holds true for uncovering the psychological factors that affect a patient’s health. Once these have been identified, the physician can assist the patient in harnessing the power of an intensely focused brain to affect healing, in cooperation with modern medical therapies.

In western cultures, most people are familiar with two of the three normal states of mind: awake and asleep. Many people, however, are “put off” by the term trance, which defines the third. You may have experienced trance on many occasions without realizing it. Can you remember a time when you have driven through an intersection without being fully aware of breaking or accelerating at the right moment? In this case, the subconscious mind, which protects us from harm, “did all the driving”, while the overloaded conscious mind “went on holiday”. You may have experienced times when people called out to you repeatedly within ear shot without you being aware. You may have been so engrossed in reading a book, studying, or watching a favorite TV show that your conscious mind had disconnected. These are examples of spontaneous trance — intense focus on a singular task or action that excludes all distractions.

Brain imaging studies have shown that different areas of the brain are activated during trance state, as compared to the awake or sleeping states. Dr. Curtis believes that through guidance of motivated patients, these states of intense focus (trance) can be applied to dramatically effect the healing of mind, body and spirit.

It has been well demonstrated that the autonomic nervous system which modulates calmness or alternatively triggers a “fight flight” state, can be manipulated by the subconscious mind to slow the heartbeat, decrease blood pressure, or prevent bleeding. The brain can also be directed to lessen pain, produce anesthesia and so on.  Studies have demonstrated the therapeutic benefits of hypnosis for the treatment of ailments, including tobacco, alcohol and drug dependence, phobias, panic attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, Raynaud’s phenomenon, and obesity, to name a few. It is beneficial to unlock the deeply protective and powerful potential of the subconscious mind. Dr. Curtis believes that all patients should have an opportunity to learn how to self-hypnotize in order to manage the complexity of disease states and life itself.
